From jcarrier@engsoc.carleton.caWed Jan 10 23:13:42 1996 Date: Tue, 22 Aug 1995 16:04:29 -0400 (EDT) From: James CarriereTo: tmaclean@mae.carleton.ca Cc: malcolm_bibby@carleton.ca, bog@engsoc.carleton.ca Subject: CUESEF donation request To: CUESEF From: Carleton Student Engineering Society EngSoc Unix Project Board of Governors Re: Request for funding allocation for new PC based server Date: Tuesday August 22, 1995 We, the EngSoc Unix Project Board of Governors have come to an agreement to request $4600 to purchase the following computer equipment: Intel Pentium 90 processor $405 Quantum Triton motherboard $270 1.2 gigabyte Western Digital hard drive $335 2*16 megabyte SIMM RAM $1250 SMC Ultra Ethernet card $195 PCI Trident SVGA card $90 1.44 megabyte 3.5" floppy disk drive $35 mid tower with power supply $145 Tape backup unit (estimated cost) $1275 ----- Subtotal: $4000 PST+GST $600 -------- Total: $4600 We believe that we need to add the above system to meet our needs this fall. There are currently 70 active accounts on EngSoc. We are anticipating 200-400 accounts by the end of September, and up to 800 accounts by the end of January. Currently we have CPU and memory capability for approximately 30 simultaneous logins. This number will double with the addition of the above system. We have considered the number of simultaneous logins on the CHAT server during the 1994-1995 academic year and we believe that a capability of 60 simultaneous logins will be able to comfortably support our users well past September and adequately support our users when we reach our projected 800 account figure. Also, in order to create a more secure file system, a tape backup unit is required. Currently, our system consists of equipment donated by the CSES, the Office of the Dean of Engineering, the library, CREL Tech and personal donors. The EngSoc Unix project meets the CUESEF criteria of providing academic benefits. All undergraduate students are entitled to an EngSoc account which gives them Internet access through a Unix shell. EngSoc account holders are not limited to learning through exposure to a unix prompt, but also are able to program in perl, cgi, or html. We plan to host all of the CSES web pages including the CSES online exam library. We are also planning to increase the selection of old exams. The only requirements to become a staff member of EngSoc are engineering enrollment, a willingness to learn, and ability to work with the team. We believe that for these reasons, the EngSoc project is of exceptional direct educational value to the engineering students at Carleton. We have an agreement with CREL Tech, a local electronics supplier run by a Carleton Engineering alumnus, where we have access to wholesale prices. The prices quoted above are wholesale, not retail. Nothing about the EngSoc project is for profit or personal financial gain. All left over money from donations goes into a general fund for the project only. Please, if there's anything we can do to further this request, let us know. The Board of Governors, consisting of James Chow, Alex deVries, Joshua Lamorie, Sean Hay and myself, can be reached via email at bog@engsoc.carleton.ca. - James Carriere
